Average calculator showing mean median mode statistics

An average calculator summarizes a whole dataset with a few key statistics. Paste test scores, monthly expenses, race times or any list of numbers to instantly see the mean (arithmetic average), the median (middle value), the mode (most frequent value), the range and the count. It accepts numbers separated by commas, spaces, semicolons or line breaks.

How do you calculate the mean of a list of numbers?

Add all the numbers together and divide by how many there are. For 82, 91, 76, 88 and 95, the sum is 432 and the mean is 432 / 5 = 86.4. This is the standard arithmetic average.

The mean is sensitive to outliers: one very large value pulls it up. When your data has extremes, compare it with the median.

What is the difference between mean, median and mode?

The mean is the arithmetic average, the median is the middle value when numbers are sorted, and the mode is the most frequent value. Each describes the "center" of data differently.

Use the mean for symmetric data like test scores, the median for skewed data like incomes, and the mode for the most common category or value.

How do you find the median of an even number of values?

Sort the numbers, take the two middle values and average them. For 74, 76, 82, 88, 91, 95 the two middle values are 82 and 88, so the median is 85.

For an odd count, the median is simply the single middle value after sorting.

What does it mean if there is no mode?

It means no value repeats, so every value is equally "most frequent". This is common in small datasets of distinct measurements, and the calculator reports it as "no mode".

A dataset can also have two or more modes (bimodal or multimodal) when several values tie for the highest frequency.

Frequently asked questions

What statistics does this calculator show?

Mean, median, mode, range, count, and min/max - computed instantly from whatever numbers you paste in.

What separators can I use between numbers?

Commas, spaces, semicolons and line breaks all work, and you can mix them. Anything that is not a number is ignored.

How is the mode handled when two numbers tie?

All tied values are listed as modes. If no value repeats at all, the calculator reports "no mode" instead of inventing one.

Can I paste negative numbers or decimals?

Yes. Negative numbers, decimals and large values are all handled. Sorting and statistics work the same way.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. The statistics are computed entirely in your browser. Your numbers never leave your device.
