Frequently asked questions

Which editions are supported?

APA 7th edition, MLA 9th edition, and Chicago author-date (17th ed.). Formatting rules are coded directly from the style manuals' published guidelines.

How does DOI / ISBN autofill work?

Paste a DOI and we query the free Crossref API; paste an ISBN and we query Open Library. No API key needed. If the lookup fails (unknown identifier, offline), just fill the form manually โ€” all formatting is 100% client-side and works without internet.

Do I need to check the capitalization?

Yes โ€” please do. APA uses sentence case for article and book titles, which the tool applies automatically, but it cannot know which words are proper nouns. Give proper nouns (names, places) a quick check before submitting.

Is my bibliography saved?

Yes โ€” in your browser's local storage on this device only. Nothing is uploaded anywhere. Clearing browser data will remove it, so copy your final bibliography into your document.

Why is this better than Chegg's Citation Machine?

No ad walls, no account, no "citation limits", no upsell popups โ€” and it works offline. The trade-off: you type the details yourself when autofill can't find a source.

Can I trust this for my paper?

The rules implemented are the standard published ones, but style guides have edge cases (translated works, republished editions, missing authors). For a thesis or publication, do a final check against the manual or your institution's guide.
