Free ZIP code distance calculator measuring miles between two ZIPs

A ZIP code distance calculator is a free online tool that measures how far apart two postal codes are in 60+ countries. Pick the country, enter both codes, and get the straight-line distance in miles and kilometers, with both cities named, computed from real coordinates via the free Zippopotam API, with no signup.

Measure the distance

How do you calculate the distance between two postal codes?

Look up the latitude and longitude of each postal code, then apply the haversine formula, which computes the great-circle distance on a sphere. The tool above does both steps: pick a country, enter two of its codes, and it fetches real coordinates from the free Zippopotam API and returns miles and kilometers instantly.

For example, New York 10001 to Los Angeles 90210 measures about 2,446 miles straight-line. The same method powers "stores near me" features and delivery radius checks.

Is straight-line distance the same as driving distance?

No. Straight-line (as the crow flies) distance ignores roads, terrain and water, so driving distance is typically 20-40% longer. Use straight-line distance for radius searches and rough estimates, and a routing service when you need actual drive times. The result card states the method so there is no confusion.

For shipping quotes and service areas, straight-line distance is the standard quick filter: if a customer is 50 straight-line miles away, the drive will only be longer.

What is the haversine formula?

The haversine formula computes the shortest distance between two points on a sphere from their latitudes and longitudes. It accounts for the Earth's curvature, which flat-map math (Pythagorean distance on degrees) gets wrong over long distances like coast to coast.

Using the Earth's mean radius of 3,958.8 miles, the formula is accurate to well within 1% for ZIP-to-ZIP measurements; the bigger uncertainty is the ZIP centroid itself.

Why use postal codes instead of addresses for distance?

Postal codes are quick to type, need no geocoding key, and are precise enough for zone pricing, territory planning and "how far" questions. Addresses give door-to-door accuracy but require heavier geocoding services with API keys and usage limits. Both cities are named in the result for easy verification.

When exact mileage matters for billing, confirm with a routing tool; when you need a fast honest estimate, ZIP-to-ZIP is the right tool.

FAQs

Is this ZIP distance calculator free?

Yes. Measure distances between postal codes in 60+ countries as often as you like with no account and no limits.

Do both postal codes have to be in the same country?

Yes. Pick one country and enter two codes from it. Cross-country distances need geocoding instead, which this tool does not do.

Is this driving distance or straight-line distance?

Straight-line (as the crow flies) distance between the two postal code centroids, computed with the haversine formula. Driving distance is typically 20-40% longer.

How accurate is the distance?

Very accurate for the method: coordinates come from the free Zippopotam API covering 60+ countries and the haversine formula models the Earth's curvature. Precision is limited by postal code centroid granularity, not the math. If a code's coordinates are invalid in the source data, the tool refuses to compute a distance rather than invent one.

What if a postal code is not found?

You will see exactly which code failed with a hint to check the format for that country. The tool never invents coordinates for unknown codes.

Can I get the distance in kilometers too?

Yes. Every result shows both miles and kilometers side by side.
