CSV cleaner removing empty rows and blank columns from a messy spreadsheet

A CSV cleaner is a free online tool that tidies messy spreadsheet exports. It deletes fully empty rows, drops columns that contain nothing but blanks, and pads ragged rows so every line has the same width. You get a line-by-line report of everything removed, then download a clean file that imports without errors.

How do I clean up a messy CSV file?

Short answer: Paste the CSV or upload the file, tick the cleanups you want (empty rows, empty columns, ragged-row padding), and press Clean CSV. The tool rewrites the data with proper quoting, shows a report of every row and column removed or fixed, and gives you a download-ready file. Your original text is never altered.

Run this before importing into Excel, Google Sheets, a database, or a CRM: most import errors come from blank rows and uneven columns, both of which this fixes in one pass.

What counts as an empty row or column?

Short answer: A row is empty when every one of its cells is blank or contains only whitespace. A column is empty when all of its cells, including the header, are blank; a column with a header but no data also counts as empty and is removed. Cells with a single space or tab are treated as empty too.

Quoted empty strings and cells containing only line breaks are handled the same way, so exports from different tools clean up consistently.

Will cleaning change my actual data?

Short answer: No. Non-empty cells are copied byte-for-byte, including quoted commas, escaped quotes, and multi-line values. The only changes are deletions of fully empty rows and columns, plus optional padding of short rows with empty cells. The report lists exactly what changed so you can verify.

If stray spaces inside cells are your problem rather than empty rows, use the CSV Whitespace Cleaner, which trims every cell without deleting anything.

Frequently asked questions

Is this CSV cleaner free?

Yes. Clean unlimited CSV files with no account and no limits. It runs entirely in your browser.

What does pad ragged rows mean?

Some exports have rows with fewer cells than the header. Padding adds empty cells so every row has the same width, which stops spreadsheet apps from shifting data into the wrong columns.

Does it delete rows with some empty cells?

No. A row is removed only when all of its cells are empty. Partially filled rows are kept exactly as they are.

Can it clean tab or semicolon delimited files?

Yes. Choose the delimiter before cleaning: comma, semicolon, tab, or pipe. The output keeps the same delimiter.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. All cleaning happens locally in your browser, including uploaded files.
