Fraction calculator showing fraction arithmetic and simplification

A fraction calculator does exact arithmetic on fractions without the common-denominator headache. Enter two fractions, pick add, subtract, multiply or divide, and get the answer automatically reduced to lowest terms, plus its mixed-number and decimal forms. Ideal for homework, recipes, woodworking measurements and quick math checks.

Enter two fractions

Tip: enter whole numbers as fractions over 1 (for example, 3 = 3/1).

How do you add fractions with different denominators?

Multiply to a common denominator: a/b + c/d = (ad + bc) / bd, then simplify. For example, 1/2 + 1/4 = (4 + 2) / 8 = 6/8 = 3/4. The calculator does this automatically.

You never need to find the lowest common denominator by hand here: the tool uses the product of the denominators and reduces the answer with the greatest common divisor.

How do you divide fractions?

Flip the second fraction and multiply: a/b divided by c/d equals (a x d) / (b x c). For example, 1/2 / 1/4 = (1 x 4) / (2 x 1) = 4/2 = 2.

Division by zero is impossible: if the second fraction equals zero, the calculator shows an error instead of a wrong answer.

What does it mean to simplify a fraction?

Simplifying (reducing) means dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor until no common factor remains. 6/8 simplifies to 3/4 because both divide by 2.

A simplified fraction is the standard final form teachers expect, and it makes mixed numbers and decimals easier to read.

How do you convert a fraction to a mixed number?

Divide the numerator by the denominator: the quotient is the whole part and the remainder over the denominator is the fraction part. 7/3 becomes 2 1/3.

Mixed numbers are handy for measurements and recipes, while improper fractions are easier for further calculation. This page shows both.

Frequently asked questions

What operations does this fraction calculator support?

Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of two fractions. Pick the operation from the dropdown and the answer is computed and simplified instantly.

Does it simplify the answer automatically?

Yes. Every result is reduced to lowest terms using the greatest common divisor, and the step-by-step panel shows the GCD used.

Can I enter whole numbers?

Yes. Enter a whole number as a fraction over 1 (for example, 3 as 3/1). Mixed numbers are shown in the output automatically.

What happens if I enter a zero denominator?

The calculator shows an error message. A fraction with a zero denominator is undefined in mathematics, so no answer is given.

Is my input uploaded anywhere?

No. All fraction arithmetic runs in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing is sent to any server.
