How do I crop an image online for free?

Upload your photo to the Image Cropper above, then drag across the image to draw a selection box. Use an aspect-ratio preset like 1:1 or 16:9 if you need a specific shape, check the live pixel readout, pick PNG or JPG output, and click Crop and download. The crop is cut from the original full-resolution file in your browser.

Works with both mouse and touch, so you can crop on a phone by dragging with your finger. If you draw the box wrong, just drag again or hit Clear selection and start over. The crop always comes from the original pixels, never from the on-screen preview.

Will cropping reduce the quality of my photo?

No. Cropping only removes pixels outside your selection, so the area you keep stays at its original quality and resolution. Saving as PNG is completely lossless. If you choose JPG output, the quality slider controls a small amount of compression, so keep it at 90 percent or above for near-identical results.

The one thing that does change is the pixel count: a crop is smaller than the original because you cut part of it away. That is expected. The readout shows the exact output dimensions, so you can make sure the crop is still large enough for your needs.

What is the best aspect ratio for a profile picture?

Use the 1:1 square preset for profile pictures, since most social platforms display avatars in square or circular frames. The cropper locks the box to a perfect square, so your subject stays centered. For cover photos and banners, 16:9 works best, and 4:3 suits standard photo prints.

When a platform crops your photo into a circle, keep faces and text well inside the square, away from the corners that get cut off. Leave a little breathing room around the subject for the safest result.

Can I crop an image on my phone?

Yes. The cropper uses pointer events, so it works with both mouse and touch. Open this page on your phone, upload a photo, and drag with your finger to draw the selection. You can pinch-zoom the page for fine adjustments, then crop and download the result.

On small screens the image is scaled down for display, but the crop is always exported at the original full resolution, so phone crops are just as sharp as desktop ones.

Frequently asked questions

Is this image cropper really free and unlimited?

Yes. No signup, no watermark, no daily caps and no locked features. Cropping runs entirely in your browser with the HTML Canvas API.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. Your image stays on your device and is cropped locally in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere, so your photos stay private.

Can I move or resize the selection after drawing it?

Simply drag again to draw a new selection box, or use the reset button to clear it. When an aspect-ratio preset is active, the box keeps that ratio automatically while you drag.

Does the crop keep the original resolution?

Yes. The crop is cut from the full-resolution original, so the selected area keeps every pixel it had. The live readout shows the exact output dimensions before you download.

Which output is better, PNG or JPG?

PNG is lossless and best for graphics, screenshots and images that need maximum quality. JPG produces much smaller files for photos, and the quality slider lets you control the compression.
