A duplicate line remover is a free online tool that deletes repeated lines from any list and keeps only unique lines. Toggle case-sensitive matching and blank-line handling, and the tool shows exactly how many duplicates it removed.
Unique lines
How do I remove duplicate lines from a list?
Short answer: Paste your list into the box above with one item per line. The tool instantly deletes every repeated line and keeps the first occurrence of each unique line, preserving your original order. The cleaned list appears in the output box with a count of how many duplicates were removed, ready to copy.
Use the case-sensitive toggle when capitalization matters: with it off, 'Apple' and 'apple' count as the same line and one is removed; with it on, both are kept. The ignore-blank-lines toggle drops empty lines during cleanup, which is handy for tidying pasted data.
Does it keep the first or the last occurrence of a duplicate?
Short answer: It keeps the first occurrence and removes later repeats. That means the order of your original list is preserved: the first time a line appears decides its position in the cleaned output. Nothing is re-sorted, so numbered or prioritized lists keep their meaning.
If you want the cleaned list sorted alphabetically afterward, paste the result into the Sort Lines tool. The two tools work well together for preparing mailing lists, keyword lists and data files.
What counts as a duplicate line?
Short answer: Two lines are duplicates when their text matches exactly, character for character. Trailing spaces make lines different, so 'apple' and 'apple ' are not duplicates unless you trim them first with the Whitespace Remover. With case-sensitive matching off, lines that differ only in capitalization count as duplicates.
Blank lines are handled by the ignore-blank-lines toggle: on, they are dropped silently; off, the first blank line is kept as a unique line and further blanks count as duplicates of it.
